Learning and playing music stimulates and activates many parts of the brain at the same time and gets the different parts of the brain sending messages between them. Scientific research has shown that musical training can change brain structure and function for the better and make musicians more mentally alert. It can also improve long-term memory and lead to better brain development for those who start at a young age. ABC TV has an interesting program ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ on Sundays at 7.40pm. With Christmas coming up, now is a great time to buy an instrument. A serviced preloved instrument is generally okay. In 2019 our band program will be offering tuition to Year 3-6 students in saxophone, trombone, clarinet, flute, percussion, keyboard and electric bass. Instrument trials will be held on Monday 10 December. Contact Yvonne Thompson yvonne.thompson4@det.nsw.edu.au. For beginner violin and cello lessons ($12 for a small group lesson, free violin hire) contact Paul Robinson 0400 574 309. Limited places available. For individual keyboard lessons with Barbara Downes contact the school office. For drum kit lessons contact Dan Mueller mail@danmueller.com.au. Year 4 and Stage 3 voice ensembles recently celebrated the joy of music by joining 700,000 students around Australia singing in unison as part of the ‘Music Count Us In’ program.
