On Friday 30 November, approximately 60 Aboriginal students from across the Coastal Learning Community gathered at Kingscliff High School for the annual Yuli Presentation day. The day began with rotational activities provided by Josh, Christine and Juzzy Slabb from Banaam. Students learnt about bush tucker and hunting for stingrays and mud crabs by visiting the shoreline of Cudgen Creek, learnt the traditional dance associated with hunting for stingrays, played Traditional Indigenous Games, and developed skills in Aboriginal painting.
Following lunch the formal presentation took place. Special guest speaker Lucas Proudfoot, an ex Pottsville Beach Public School and Kingscliff High School student and renowned cultural performer and author, shared the importance of culture and family in shaping who you are, and how he used this to achieve his goals. Each student received certificates to recognise their involvement in the Yuli program throughout the year.
The Yuli Organising Committee would like to thank Banaam, Joel and Mary Slabb from Juraki Surf Culture, Uncle Franc Krasna and Leweena Williams from the Tweed/Byron Local Aboriginal Land Council, along with the Principals from all the CLC schools, for their continual support of the Yuli Program.
