Our school uniform
School dress code guidelines
At Pottsville Beach Public School (PBPS) we are committed to Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL). We have high expectations and strive to be Safe Respectful Learners all times. PBPS has developed the School Dress Code Guidelines to support the wellbeing, health and safety of our students and school community.
Rationale:
School uniforms promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community. School uniforms also contribute to the personal safety of students by allowing easier recognition of students inside the school and in the community.
NSW Department of Education School Uniform Policy
Aims:
- To promote equality amongst all students.
- To further develop a sense of pride in, and identification with our school.
- To provide durable clothing that is cost effective and practical for our school environment.
- To maintain and enhance the positive image of the school in the community.
Wellbeing factors considered:
- The diversity of the school population (options are available within the agreed school uniform)
- Uniform items encourage physical activity
- Shorts and pants options are available, including options for girls
- Items are affordable, comfortable for all body shapes and appropriate for a variety of learning and break-time activities
- Appropriate, fair and consistent responses for students not following school uniform requirements
Health & Safety factors considered:
- Sun safe uniform items, including hats that protect the head, neck and ears
- Uniform items necessary for particular activities, eg safe footwear
- Availability of uniform items for cold and hot weather
- Road safety/visibility of uniforms
Implementation:
- After consultation with the school community (P&C Association) the school has developed the School Dress Code Guidelines that we believe provides choice for the students, allows for students to safely engage in the many varied school activities, and caters for the financial constraints of families.
- The School Dress Code Guidelines apply during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when students are on school excursions.
- Summer and winter uniforms, as well as sports uniforms will be prescribed, and are required to be worn.
- Year 6 t-shirts can be worn on non-sport days during Year 6, as part of their leadership incentive and pride.
- North Coast PSSA Uniform: Students who represent our school through the North Coast Primary School Sports Association have the opportunity to purchase the team uniform for that sport. These students are invited to wear this uniform for the week following their event. After this time, students are expected to wear our regular, full school uniform.
- Stud earrings and sleepers worn in the ears, plus watches are the only acceptable jewellery.
- A broad rimmed school hat, with school emblem must be worn outside during recess, lunch, sport and any other outside activities. To support the safety and wellbeing of our students we have a “No Hat – Play in the Shade Guidelines”. Hats are not to be worn inside, unless in exceptional circumstances.
- Parents and Citizens Association will operate the school Uniform Shop and will operate a second-hand uniform pool for parents. Donations of second-hand items are accepted throughout the year.
- The student School Dress Code Guidelines, including details of uniform items and places of purchase, will be published in the newsletter at the start of each school term.
- The entire school community will be responsible for implementation of the School Dress Code Guidelines in a manner consistent with the Student Wellbeing guidelines.
- Parents seeking exemptions to the School Dress Code Guidelines due to religious beliefs, ethnic or cultural background, student disability, health condition or economic hardship must apply in writing to the principal.
- Uniforms are available for ordering through the Qkr! App or purchasing through the P&C uniform shop, which is open on Wednesday mornings 8:45am – 9:45am, and every first and last Friday of the month.
- Students wearing clothes or items not in line with our School Dress Code Guidelines will be provided with aSchool Dress Code Guidelines – Letter to Parents which outlines item/s of concern. In some cases, parent/carers may be contacted if immediate action is required, such as a student wearing inappropriate items of clothing that do not support the student’s safety, health or wellbeing.
